The Cubby House

My husband and I never imagined we would one day design and build furniture and decor for a living. When we married in 2010 we were happily PAYG earners; Paul is a qualified Occupational Therapist and I am a Music Teacher. We bought our own home and began filling it with children. After having two girls I mentioned to Paul one day that I would love them to have a cubby house in the backyard. So we began looking only to find that the pretty ones were super expensive and still didn’t really suit our vision. Paul decided he would make one, to which I replied “you can’t build that”….and so began his journey to learn the art of woodworking.

With Long Service Leave at hand, he researched, researched, researched and set his hand to the task. The end result was a beautiful cubby house that now adorns our backyard and a newly ignited passion for design and working with timber.

Bit by bit over the next 12 months tools were added to his collection, and the garage transformed into a woodworkers shed. We began to design and make gifts for family and friends who then began to express to us “you should sell that!” At first, we were quite reluctant but began to see the possibilities of turning our part-time hobby into something that could maybe generate us a little income. So, we opened an Etsy store just to dip our toe in the water. We had no idea what was about to follow was ever-increasing orders. Things got rather busy, with many funny moments of jugging family life, full-time work and a part-time business…we even delivered our very first parcel in very early stages of labour with our third child!

We still run our Etsy store as a platform to continue to reach our Etsy customers domestically as well as internationally. A link to our Etsy website is below.
